There are two locations in Vancouver and one in Richmond, along with two restaurants under the Kamei names. The brand itself is very well-known in Vancouver, and they hope to expand it in Toronto with this new outpost.

    However, over the last two decades, much has changed, including the demise of arcade and game centers due the emergence of mobile phones and Netflix. The health movement over the last six years has also made Dave and Buster's traditional burger and fries menu far less appealing than what it was. With that being said, they have changed their food menu, and the options are now more diverse. The menu is rather extensive with items like shareable appetizers, side salads, beef steaks and ribs, pasta, sandwiches, and so much more.

    Morals Village is a hot pot restaurant chain with over 600 locations in China. They opened their first Canadian location in 2015, and has since grown at a relatively rapid pace. About 1.5 weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the Morals Village Mississauga Grand Opening Event. The Mississauga location is their 5th Canadian location, and they have plans to open another in Ottawa. With that being said, Morals Village prides themselves in providing top-notch quality and Szechuan cuisine influenced flavour with their hot pot offering.

The 12,000-square-foot Montecito opened up its doors late 2014, and is a partnership between Hollywood director Ivan Reitman and Chef Jonathan Waxman.

Sukho Thai

There are currently three Sukho Thai locations in downtown Toronto. This review is based on my visit to their original location on Parliament Street. Although, you can read my review of their Wellington location here. I haven't seen a friend of mine in a while, and he suggested checking out Sukho Thai on Parliament. I am a fan of Thai food, so I didn't object to the suggestion. I enjoyed my meal at their second location, so I came in with the anticipation that the Pad Thai here would be similar in terms of flavor profile and presentation. 


The original location was fairly unassuming from the outside, and situated on a pretty busy block. The restaurant space was a lot smaller than I expected, but it looked cozy. My friend and I arrived around 6 pm on a Thursday night, and it wasn't too busy. A few tables were occupied, and most of the foot traffic going in and out were takeouts. We left before the dinner rush, but I have heard that it does get really busy.


 Sukho Thai's menu offers traditional and authentic Thai cuisine at decent prices.


As per usual, I opted for the Sukhothai Pad Thai ($13) - stir fried rice noodles in a light tamarind-based sauce with chicken, beef, tofu. I chose the shrimp option for an additional $1. The way that they plated the Pad Thai made the portion looked small, but I was wrong as it was more than enough. The Pad Thai was hot and full of flavorful. As I have mentioned in my previous review, they use tamarind so the color of the sauce isn't bright red (no ketchup here). The spice level was just the right amount giving it a slight kick without being overbearingly hot. However, if you like your noodles extra spicy then I'd suggest getting "Thai spicy".


My friend, Tim, got the Sukhothai Pad Thai ($13) - stir fried rice noodles in a light tamarind-based sauce with tofu.

Sukho Thai

Sukhothai recently opened up their third location on Dundas St. W, replacing the brunch spot, The Guild. They now have three locations to their name throughout the downtown area. A couple of months back, a friend and I decided to eat at the Wellington location around 6 pm. We chose a good time as we were immediately seated when we arrived, but they did get busier as the night went on. 


Walking on Wellington Street E, you will see a plethora of restaurants in the area. However, it's not that hard to miss the giant dark green sign with an elephant logo on the storefront. This location is much larger than their original location and can accommodate more diners.


The decor was a mix of rustic and modern with its exposed brick and comfortable seating. It differs from Khao San Road's communal styled seating. As for the menu, it was a simple two pager showcasing main dishes between $10-$15 and the appetizers are roughly $5-$10 per dish. The prices may be slightly higher than the average Thai establishments downtown but the quality of the food is definitely there. 


I ordered the shrimp sukhoThai pad thai ($15) - included peanuts, long leaf and lime, and it came out nicely presented and was good sized portion. The flavor profile was definitely there as I thought that that the Pad Thai had a good balance between tangy and spicy. Additionally, they use tamarind in the paste which is so much better than ketchup which a lot of places use as an alternative.

 In regards to the service, our server was brisk but he was friendly. We didn't wait long for our orders to be taken, and the food arrived in a timely manner.


My friend, Ray, got the curry ($13) - includes rice and choice of chicken, beef, tofu, fish or shrimp. However, it's an extra $1 if you opt for the fish or shrimp options.

Pi Tom's Thai Cuisine

Delivery Review (Quick Bites)

I first learned about Pi Tom's Thai Cuisine about 2 years ago, and dined at their now closed Jarvis location. The one on Jarvis was located in a non-high traffic area with very little foot traffic, so I wasn't surprised when it closed down. However, Pi Tom's Thai Cuisine's original location is still open, and we ordered delivery from time to time. Pi Tom's Thai Cuisine is one of very few locations that offer the authentic pad thai on their menu, where it's wrapped in an egg.

They offer free delivery for order more than $25 (before tax) and it takes about 45 minutes to an hour. They usually do deliver in the allotted time frame, and I don't recall a time where they went over an hour.


 The Authentic Pad Thai ($12.95) was quite interesting as I have never tried it anywhere else in the GTA. This authentic dish contains a serving of rice noodles with a generous amount of chicken, shrimp, tofu, bean sprouts in a sweet and sour tamarind and coconut sauce. The one difference is that the entire Paid Thai is wrapped inside of a fried egg crepe.


The Pad Thai ($11.95) was Thai rice noodles sauteed with egg, chicken, shrimp, bean sprouts and tofu in a sweet and sour (ketchup) sauce. Unlike the authentic dish above, this one contains ketchup instead of tamarind which you can definitely taste. It's a little surprising that the restaurant tout themselves as serving authentic Thai, and then uses ketchup in their Pad Thai. This dish was edible, but unfortunately it was only average when compared with other Thai establishments that I have dined at. The Authentic Pad Thai fared a lot better if you compared it by taste.


The shrimp rolls ($8.50) contained 6 pieces of deep-fried marinated shrimp rolls and spicy sauce. I absolutely loved these crispy appetizers, as it was not oily and delicious.

Khao San Road

There aren't that many Thai restaurants uptown where I live so I usually have to trek downtown for it. A friend and I decided to meet up for dinner to catch up over some Thai food. She recommended Khao San Road as she ate there before, and liked it. The place is a small restaurant offering several authentic Thai dishes. It is named after a street in Bangkok, Thailand, that is now commonly known as a "backpacker ghetto".


We arrived a little after 6:00 pm and noticed that there was a small line already forming (they open for dinner at 5 pm). One of waitresses then took down the names of the people in lines, and names would be called once the tables are unoccupied. My friend and I were seated at a long communal table that was occupied by a party of 8 people (who were together). Honestly, I am so used to eating at establishments with communal tables that it doesn't ruin my dining experience (as some people do like privacy more than others).

My friend had a very heavy lunch at her workplace, so she ordered a drink and fresh rolls (po pia pak sod gai yaw) ($7.00) which were filled with homemade chicken sausage, lettuce, carrots, mint leaves, and Thai basil. It was served with tamarind sauce topped with peanuts and coriander. I tried a roll and thought that it was a light appetizer to start with. 


I opted for the Pad Thai (street style) ($14.00) which seems to be getting consistent high reviews online. The dish was delicious and I liked the combination of the savory flavor of both sweet and spicy. Additionally, the fresh noodles are stir-fried in tamarind sauce so there's no ketchup flavoring to the Pad Thai. However, I made the biggest mistake in getting "Thai Spicy" as I initially thought that I had a high tolerance of spice ... I was very wrong. I started to tear up badly but that's another story on its own.

Despite my lack of judgement over my tolerance of spice; I thought the service was great. Our waitress saw my "silent cry of pain" and asked if "I was doing okay?". After telling her that I was okay; she walked away only to return a few minutes later with a complimentary Thai iced tea. She was friendly to begin with but I really did appreciate this gesture on her part.

The Thai iced tea ($4.50) is an infusion of Thai spices and black tea mixed with condensed milk and served with ice. It is a very refreshing drink that compliments the spicy dishes.

Mengrai Thai

If you are looking for good Thai food in downtown Toronto, then look no further ... I'd definitely would recommend Mengrai Thai. It is among one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the GTA. 


I ordered the prix fixe menu ($35.00), which included an appetizer platter (mango salad, the taro yam roll, the shrimp triangle wrapper, and the crisp dumpling), a second course, an entrée (main meal) and dessert. I think this is one of the better choices, as you get value for the dollar.


I thought the soup in the pineapple was an innovative idea and it looked pleasantly appetizing. However, I was not too fond of the soup base as I thought that the taste of the pineapple was relatively overpowering.

One particular dish that I usually order would be the chicken and shrimp pad thai ($13.00). I do like the execution of this dish as it is both flavorful, and perfectly spicy. Additionally, the chef is not skimpy on the amounts of chicken and shrimp.


The atmosphere of the restaurant itself was a very intimate and private one; as there are spaces in between tables. Mengrai Thai is also decorated with intricate Thai decorations, which adds to the cultural appeals of the restaurant.

In regards to the service, I have always had a pleasant experience; whether it's dining in or take-out. The staff here are always very helpful and nice.

Real Thailand Restaurant

I stumbled upon this Thai restaurant while walking home from an afternoon trip to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM).

Real Thailand Restaurant is a mid-sized restaurant serving the standard Thai dishes at affordable prices. A majority of the dishes on the menu are under $10.00 each.

The green mango salad ($7.95) was appetizing; consisting of fresh veggies, crispy mango slices and the potion was generous. 


I have never tried the tom yum goong ($7.95), so I decided to ordered it this time around. Tom yum goong is a widely served spicy and sour soup in Thailand. I thought that the soup had a nice balance of being both spicy and soup. However, the portion was a little skimpy as my bowl only had two pieces of shrimps, and the rest were pretty much all noodles and veggies.

The pad thai ($8.95) was a little disappointing as it tasted rather sweet. It lacked the piquant tastes of hot peppers. I had to requests for extra peppers as my pad thai was not spicy at all. I don't recommend the pad thai here unless you're not a fan of spices.

In my opinion; I thought that the service was far superior compared to the food itself. The servers were attentive and friendly, without being too intrusive. Overall, I was full from my meal and had an OK experience at Real Thailand Restaurant.
