I had the pleasure of getting a sneak peek of some of the products that Tsujiri Toronto has to offer a day before its soft opening, and got the chance to chat with one of the managers, Tylor Shek.

There are two locations in Vancouver and one in Richmond, along with two restaurants under the Kamei names. The brand itself is very well-known in Vancouver, and they hope to expand it in Toronto with this new outpost.

    However, over the last two decades, much has changed, including the demise of arcade and game centers due the emergence of mobile phones and Netflix. The health movement over the last six years has also made Dave and Buster's traditional burger and fries menu far less appealing than what it was. With that being said, they have changed their food menu, and the options are now more diverse. The menu is rather extensive with items like shareable appetizers, side salads, beef steaks and ribs, pasta, sandwiches, and so much more.

    Morals Village is a hot pot restaurant chain with over 600 locations in China. They opened their first Canadian location in 2015, and has since grown at a relatively rapid pace. About 1.5 weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending the Morals Village Mississauga Grand Opening Event. The Mississauga location is their 5th Canadian location, and they have plans to open another in Ottawa. With that being said, Morals Village prides themselves in providing top-notch quality and Szechuan cuisine influenced flavour with their hot pot offering.

The fair takes place every November in Toronto, and it is where guests can enjoy the best in agriculture, local food, and equestrian competitions from across the country. There are so many things to do, and see at this year's The Royal Winter Agricultural Fair.

The 12,000-square-foot Montecito opened up its doors late 2014, and is a partnership between Hollywood director Ivan Reitman and Chef Jonathan Waxman.

#GoodFoodPromise with Fionn MacCool's

We had the pleasure of visiting the Front Street location of Fionn MacCool's last month to check out their new #GoodFoodPromise menu. The philosophy that they instilled is that they believe in sourcing great tasting and quality ingredients from responsible Canadian family farms that they know and trust. Fionn MacCool's has several locations in Ontario, and their menu offers a variety of Irish-inspired and North American classics.

The Chicken Tacos - 3 tacos with fresh pulled chicken, cilantro-lime coleslaw and mango salsa packed into flour tortillas. Drizzled with fresh lime cream sauce and finished with a little Sriracha for some heat, was super filling and delicious.

I usually love calamari, but the Calamari - lightly dusted calamari tossed in salt, pepper and green onions. Served with our made-in-Pub fire-roasted red pepper sauce, from here was slightly too soft for my taste.

The beef used in Fionn MacCool's dishes are sourced from the proudly Canadian Beretta Farms. The cows are raised without the use of antibiotics, hormones, or steroids. For my main course, I opted for their Steak & Fries - 8 oz. Alberta top sirloin grilled to order with sautéed mushrooms, grilled tomato and fresh-cut fries. My steak was cooked perfectly as I requested - medium and the sautéed mushrooms really added to its flavor. As a steak lover, it was a highly recommended item for me.

Over-fishing is a huge issue, and Ocean Wise is helping consumers identify species that are caught or farmed in a way that ensure the long-term health and stability of that species. Fionn MacCool's is proud to serve Ocean Wise wild cod in their fish and chips and also fish tacos. My guest opted for the No.1 Fish & Chips - the only two food groups that matter. Keep it classic with a cod fillet fried to order in our made-in-Pub Barking Squirrel amber lager beer batter. It’s served with rainbow slaw, our Dungloe Sauce and fresh-cut fries. Unlike some of the other fish and chips on the market, the ones here was non-greasy. It was tender on the inside, and lightly battered on the outside. The fish are offered with hand-cut fries, tartar sauce and coleslaw (but you can substitute the fries for side salad).

In addition to sourcing the best ingredients, Fionn MacCool's is also deeply rooted in the community. 50 cents from every Mill St. Original Organic Pint sold goes to a local charity. So, don't forget to pair your food with a pint ... drink for a good cause. 

Fionn MacCool's #GoodFoodPromise menu features many new items that I think people will enjoy whether it's with friends or casual dinners. It was definitely good knowing where the ingredients came from and the chain pubs' overall message.

** Mini Review **

After finishing up dinner at Beast (review coming soon), a couple of us decided to go to SpiritHouse Toronto for some drinks. It was a Saturday, and the place was completely packed. Since we didn't have a reservation, we were asked to wait at the bar area until a table opened up. Four of the guys decided to try out some of the Whiskey flights. Since I didn't partake in this, I cannot review the individual whiskey but my friends seem to like them. After waiting around for a while, a table opened up and we were quickly seated.

SpiritHouse Toronto is a trendy bar offering reasonably priced food, and an extensive selection of drinks such as whiskey, craft cocktails, beer, etc ... Overall, it's a good place to go on the weekend to relax with some friends. They also have some specials for their weekly "Cocktail Hour" featuring $7 Tall Drinks, $10 2 Classics, and $3 Tacos; perfect for after work.

Beef Sliders - mustard crust, smoked cheddar, bread and butter pickles ($15)

SpiritHouse Nachos - confit duck, taro and corn chips, pico de gallo, scarmorza ($16)

Brazen Head

I met up with two girlfriends of mine for dinner a couple of months ago, and we were around the Liberty Village neighborhood. Brazen Head was highly recommended by one of them, as she often frequents this pub, so we decided to grab a quick bite there. 

Honestly, I have never been too particularly fond of pubs and bars due to my low alcohol tolerance level. However, I do find pubs to be great places for socializing with friends/co-workers, and also late night bites.

Brazen Head is a traditional three-floor Irish pub with an old rustic charm. We went on a Monday night, and there were tons of people inside enjoying themselves with the comfort of friends and alcohol.

Now, many of the reviews online have been quite critical about the slow service. However, I did not encounter this issue while dining that day. Although, the place was packed and busy; I thought that our waitress was quick, accommodating, and friendly. The three of us were quickly seated, given the menus and she took our orders. The menu is standard; serving traditional Irish dishes and the usual pub fares.

I shared my love of wings in a previous pub post so it was only natural that I ordered wings. So it was just our luck that Monday is Brazen Head's wings night. Every Monday, it's 1/2 price wings with the purchase of a beverage.

We opted for 2 pounds of wings ($10.50); normally $21.00 for any other days. The two flavors that we chose was honey garlic and medium. The wings were deep fried and then coated with the flavors. I thought that the wings were good and rather flavorful.

The side of fries ($5.00) was rather disappointing; it was very dry and salty.

Bishop and the Belcher

There is definitely an abundance of pubs to choose from if you're in the downtown core. I am a huge fan of chicken wings so I found the wings deal at Bishop and the Belcher to be very appealing, hence why I chose this specific pub to meet up with a friend. The only night where the wings deal is available though is every Wednesday. 

Bishop and the Belcher is a traditional British pub which you can tell from its dark, cozy and comfortable atmosphere when entering the establishment. My friend and I arrived at around 5:30 pm, and seated by one of the  hostesses. The menu isn't too exciting and just features regular pub fare, and alcohol. Unfortunately, I don't drink alcohol, so I cannot comment on the selection of the beer at Bishop and the Belcher.

The both of us decided to settle on the special of the evening which was $11.95 for 3 lbs of wings (you get two choices of flavors for each order). Just note that in order to get this deal; you must purchase a beverage, which is the norm these days for cheap wings.

They also have accompanied sides available for $2.50, and you can only order one of them. The choices are Irish nacho fries, half/half, poutine or jacket potato skins. My friend chose the jacket potato skins and I ordered a side order of french fries ($5.00).

The two flavors that we chose for the wings were Chipotle and sticky sesame garlic. Honestly, the plate of wings didn't look like 3 lbs of wings at all, and a few pieces were overcooked. However, the wings were pretty decent and the price for the amount of wings was really good. I didn't like the fries at all; they were overly salty and not crispy at all.

As for the service, I found it fairly inadequate. I know that the place was relatively busy but some of the waitresses were just talking amongst one another near the bar area. After we were seated, no one came by to take our order until 15 minutes later. Additionally, it took the food forever to arrive at our table. The table next to us (who arrived later) got their food before us. Perhaps, it was because they ordered a pitcher of beer along with wings which may have been the deciding factor as to why they were served first (who knows). Additionally, we were completely ignored by the waitresses who walked by our table despite us asking for water/bill several times.

The 3 Brewers

My friend, Raj, held his birthday party at The 3 Brewers back in mid-January 2013. He reserved the entire upper third floor for a party of about 20+ people. The 3 Brewers' a microbrewery-restaurant as they brew their own beer right on-site which I think is a very interesting concept. The pub was large in size, and has three floors. Given the large party, I thought that the staff was accommodating and the service was pretty good. 

The menu was printed like a newspaper and offers the regular pub fare at standard prices. Overall, I enjoyed the atmosphere of The 3 Brewers, and the food was just okay. 

I thought that the nachos ($10.99) could have been better as the cheese was not melted enough so it was hard to scoop it up with the nacho chips. The dish is a reasonable size for the price point so it wasn't too bad.

My personal favorite of the night would have to be their maxi fries ($5.75). The fries are dipped in beer batter and was very crispy.

I personally did not like the flammekueches ($11.99) that we ordered. The one that we got came with pepperoni, mozzarella cheese and topped with spicy olive oil. What is a flammekueches? It is a dish that resembles a very thin crust pizza. The entire thing was pretty tasteless and dry to me, which I did not enjoy.

The crème brûlée ($5.99) was good as it was creamy in texture.
